DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) – After two years of construction Methodist University Hospital celebrated on Friday [September 2014] the grand opening of its expanded emergency department.

The expanded space more than doubles the area that was in the old emergency department. It features 16 new patient treatment areas and much larger treatment rooms.

Hospital leaders say they’re excited about what this new emergency department will mean for people in the downtown area and even over in West Memphis.

“The access to to health care downtown has been limited this opens that up for the rest of the patients here in the downtown area,” said Dr. Ray Walther, Methodist University Hospital. “It gives them easy access to the health care system; in addition with West Memphis closing this is another venue for them as well. We are excited about it.”

The hospital is also getting a larger ambulance entrance and a new heliport on the roof.
